Gelanggang Kencana Sdn. Bhd. (Reg. No. 824500-A) formed in 2008, is a spin-off company of the Zeolite and Nanostructured Materials Laboratory, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Darul Takzim, Malaysia. Gelanggang Kencana is not only focusing its research on zeolites and nanostructured materials, but also in the development and commercialization of zeolites, nanostructured materials, and nanomaterials based on silica from rice husk ash. Due to technological constraints of silica sources, Gelanggang Kencana has developed indigenous technology in the synthesis and preparation of Maerogel (silica aerogel from rice husk), zeolites, and functionalized nanostructured materials.
Halimaton Hamdan, the founding inventor of Gelanggang Kencana Sdn. Bhd. was recently appointed as the Senior Fellow of Academy Science Malaysia 2020, She was conferred the Merdeka Award 2009 for Health, Science and Technology initiated by Petronas, and co-founded by ExxonMobil and Shell. She has published widely in leading journals and has more than 20 years of synthesis and development of zeolite and nanostructured materials. Currently, Halimaton is a Professor at UTM Razak Faculty of Technology and Infomatics, UTM Kuala Lumpur. She was the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia of Computer Science and Engineering (UniMy 2012-2014), the Under Secretary of the National Nanotechnology Directorate of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (2010-2012). She was the Executive Director of Enabling Science and Nanotechnology Research Alliance (eSciNano), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia till June 2010, Physical Chemistry Professor of Chemistry, Faculty of Science (till 2012) , and the Chairperson of Nanotechnology Taskforce for the Academy Sciences of Malaysia, Chairperson of NanoMITe (2014-2020). Halimaton received a BSc in Chemistry from Indiana Univeristy, MS Chemistry from Marshall University and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Peterhouse, University of Cambridge. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), Fellow of Institute Kimia Malaysia (IKM) and Fellow of Malaysia Science Association(MSA).
Mohd Nazlan has a broad range of research experiences, with the central theme being organic chemistry and solid state chemistry. His technical expertise is on synthesis of organic compounds for development of biobased advanced materials. The focus of his research is the elucidation of the mechanistic chemistry of pyrolysis of biomass with a wide range of catalysts; based on zeolites and mesoporous materials, along with the application of production of biofuels as methyl esters. His analytical experience has extended to analysis of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, ethylenediol, and glycerol) conversion to middle distillates (gasoline) via nanoZSM-5 catalyst. Nazlan was an Associate Professor and Researcher in the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Mohd Nazlan is a member of Asia Nano Forum consisting of 14 economies in the Asia-Pacific Region and maintains the National Nanotechnology Initiative webpage. Nazlan received an BA in Chemistry from Knox College, MS in Chemistry from Marshall University and a CPGS in Microstructural Physics from Clare Hall, Univeristy of Cambridge.
